Rwanda
We recommend Rwanda as the go to spot for mountain gorilla tracking, just a short trip from Tanzania in East Africa! Currently it is estimated that there are only 700 mountain gorillas remaining in the wild. While much smaller than neighboring Uganda, the mountain gorilla population is more than double the number in Rwanda. For this reason, a permit is easier to obtain in Rwanda. Tracking requires a permit and happens in Volcanoes National Park, about 2 hours from Kigali, where of one of 7 groups of gorillas will be tracked on foot – be prepared for a good hike! In addition to mountain gorillas, you can see chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest and golden monkeys in Volcanoes National Park.
