Frequently Asked Questions

Vaccination And Medication

When traveling to Tanzania it is recommended that you reach out to your physician or travel health service to figure out what vaccinations are recommended. Typically Hepatitis A+B, typhoid and diphtheria vaccinations are recommend to Tanzania. Yellow fever vaccination is not required, however if you spend more than a few hours in another country that has yellow fever (specifically Kenya) you will need to provide proof of inoculation and your Yellow Fever card prior to entry in Tanzania.

While visas can be obtained on arrival in Tanzania for travelers from many countries, the process can be slow and if possible it is recommended to get your visa prior to travel. This is the correct website to use if you would like to get your visa before you travel: Online Visa. Note you will need to have your flight arrangements prior to applying for an e-visa and it takes about 10 business days to process so plan ahead.

One thing that we cannot emphasize enough is don’t overpack! This is particularly true if you will be taking an internal flight on your safari. They have a strict luggage limit (15kg per person, including hand luggage). Soft bags are recommended over hard suitcases. Safari trucks aren’t huge – save space to move around.  For a more comprehensive post on what to pack on safari, see the link provided.

Travel Insurance

We strongly recommend that you purchase travel insurance as soon as you book your trip. First, travel insurance guarantees your trip if there are any unforeseen cancellations. While we are confident safari in Tanzania is safe, there is always the risk of unexpected medical emergencies. When that happens you want to be certain that you are covered for medical care in Tanzania and for repatriation back to your home country in the event of an accident and illness. It is generally advised to carry $100,000 USD coverage for medical care and $250,000 USD coverage for repatriation.

Our Testimonials

“My husband and I, along with 14 other friends, fulfilled a lifelong dream of going on safari in August of 2022. We were overwhelmed when trying to choose a guide company as there are thousands out there. Off the Beaten Path came very highly recommended and we couldn’t have had a better experience. White glove, first class treatment from IMPECCABLY trained guides from start to finish. The guides were adept at handling our large group, and doing so while making us feel special. They became more than guides to us, we all now consider them family. They are knowledgeable, caring, funny, and an absolute pleasure to spend a week with. They planned every detail, including a side trip to Zanzibar after our safari. Everything was top notch and they made us feel like we were their most important clients ever! We want to go back, and we would NEVER consider another company! Mike and Stephanie Adamson”

“Our family of 5 chose Off the Beaten Path for our 2 ½ week safari in Tanzania and an add on visit to Zanzibar. They were highly recommended by a close friend and lived up to our expectations in everyway. Our 12, 8 and 6 year old kids loved the time exploring the parks in the open air jeep and seeing all the animals. The guides have a real way with kids and our youngest even got a piggy back ride while on a hunting hike with a local tribe. Everything was extremely well organized and we felt truly relaxed and taken care of by the kind and knowledgeable guides. Every detail was thought of from warm water bottles and cozy blankets in the jeep for those early morning starts to full on picnics overlooking the plains with tables, chairs, and delicious food and drinks. All the personal touches show that this is a company that takes a lot of pride in their work and in their country and is always looking for ways to make their guest's experiences amazing. Highly recommend!”

On Day Trip from Arusha to Ngorongoro Organization with Jack and her associate was quick and easy. They did a good job and were really friendly. The equipment was in good shape.
The driver, Humphrey, was totally a „nature“ guy, knew everything , explained it really interesting and was overall a good guy.
We really enjoyed the trip and can totally recommend it.

Amazing safari experience The guides were fantastic. Very knowledgeable about the Serengeti. Knowing the patterns of the big cats down to the small birds. And very respectful to the animals. A very class act!

An experience like no other, I am forever changed by it. From the moment we arrived at the airport at Mt. Kilimanjaro, the client services we’re absolutely exceptional. All 5 of our different accommodations were superb and the food was delicious. Of course we came to see the animals so all of the great food and super camp staff was just a bonus! As soon as we got off the plane in Kogatende in the Serengeti it was obvious that our guides were in a class of their own. We were the only clients greeted with a champagne welcome! We were immediately off the see the wildlife and it was a magical experience within 10 minutes of taking off in the jeeps. We saw elephants, zebra, giraffe, hyenas and wildebeest just on the way to first camp! We watched many heart pounding scenes including a large wildebeest crossing on the Mara River. It was hard to believe that I was seeing this with my own eyes. There were so many scenes I experienced, I felt as though I was living in a a National Geographic documentary.
Over the course of the safari, all of our guides were able to deliver every single animal we came to see, save only 1 for next time, the rare and endangered black rhino. My group was mostly veterinarians. The guides were encyclopedic in their knowledge of animals and the plants. We asked questions that perhaps non-veterinarians may not ask and all of our questions were answered in great detail. The guides know the animals well and know where to take you and when to take you for maximum animal exposure.

As much as we vets love animals our safari did not end there. Salim and his group were able to allow us to have access to some of the indigenous tribes that live near the Ngorongoro crater. It was such a unique experience to interact with people so different from ourselves and we are truly appreciative of them allowing us into their lives for a day. We thought it funny that they asked us more questions about how we live then we asked them!

On a final note Salim custom caters this amazing trip to his clients. We were able to visit a dog rescue in Arusha, that in addition to what we all know rescues do, has the mission to educate the residents of Arusha on rabies and the need to get all street dogs vaccinated to save human lives. It is a tireless job. We also took toys and school supplies to an orphanage. It was such a good feeling to see those kids react with deep gratitude when we gave them the items we brought. Off the Beaten Path Safaris supports these organizations in their community of Arusha.

Going on Safari is a trip of a lifetime. I highly recommend you put your trust and dreams in Off the Beaten Path Safaris. You will not be disappointed!

Fantastic Safari AWESOME! AMAZING! FANTASTIC! Off The Beaten Path Safaris delivered the trip of a lifetime that included all the superlative adjectives. We did a 10-day trip to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Lake Ayesi and Salim & his staff did a superior job taking care of us the whole way. Our guides, Godson, Wilson, Joseph, Joe and Humphrey, were each erudite scholars of their craft and exhibited a tremendous depth of knowledge. Salim arranged the wonderful trip that indeed included some "off the beaten path" destinations. A very fun and friendly trip. Highly recommended!
